Windows 8 Prompt for Activation after updating the BIOS and making a hardware change

Why does Windows 8 prompt for activation after updating the BIOS and making a hardware change?

When the BIOS is updated around the same time as another hardware change, such as replacing a hard drive, Windows 8 may indicate that the key has already been used on another PC and prompt the user to activate with a new key or buy a new key.

If your computer already asks for activation, select “Contact Microsoft Customer Support” on the Windows Activation page and activate over the phone. The process takes about 6 minutes to complete and has you enter 9 groups of 7 characters into the phone and then have you write down a different set of 9 groups of 7 characters to activate.
